Carole’s Mother

Doris E. Bateman
(1912 – 1951)

The 1930 Census lists Doris Bateman, 18 years old, single, living at home and working as a laborer in an infant wear factory. Her marriage license is dated 1930, and her birthday was May 17, so she married William Russell soon after the census was taken.

Doris with daughter Carole, born in 1932.

1940 Census shows Doris Russell, 28, wife of William, living at 16 Cumberland Street in Springfield. Occupation as waitress. Children listed as Carole Russell, 7 and William Russell 4.

Carole Jean   (Chickie)
William Patrick III    (Billy)

Doris worked for many years at the Highland Hotel which had a fancy night club and was known for lobster and fine food. I believe she met Bill Russell there.

The Highland Hotel Springfield, MA

Bill worked at Fisk Tire which became U.S. Rubber company in Chicopee on the night shift and during the day at Castle Foods, purveyors of S.S. Pierce brand canned goods during WWII. Lillian Burns cared for Carole & Billy when both parents were at work.

Doris and three of her sisters were fun-loving crew and very close in their adult years. They all summered together at Couture’s Gardens Hampton Ponds in West Holyoke. Each couple had little cottages with outhouses called camps around the Ponds. Doris & Bill Russell. Allie & Art Manning. Esther & Lou Levrault. Mae & Frank McCarthy. Couture’s featured multi-colored light strings around a communal barbecue pit, with picnic tables next to the Cocktail Lounge & Strip Club. Yup.

Doris died at 39 years old only 5 months after her daughter Carole, 18, gave birth to her first child, Candy.

Doris Bateman’s Siblings

Rena, Franny, Mae, Esther, Harry, Florence, Allie

Mildred  (Rena)  1904   –  John Crane
Her son Robert’s 2011 Obit says his mother’s name was Mildred Bateman Crane. I remember an Auntie Rena & Uncle Jack. Rena’s father Francis’ 1943 obit names a daughter only as Mrs. John Crane from Thompsonville, Ct.

Rena’s youngest son Ronnie was openly gay decades before that was accepted and he had a proud and happy monogamous relationship with partner Leo for over 40 years. Ronnie & “Lee” lived for many years with an older woman named Dee. Carole was close to Ronnie. He was her daughter Cindy’s godfather. Ronnie was a doting godfather and gave Cindy full place settings of sterling silver when she was a baby. Didn’t know son John, but met Bob a few times and he seemed a loving family man.

Francis  (Franny)  1906  –  Edith Lewis
Uncle Franny & Aunt Edith Bateman owned and ran various diners & restaurants in Springfield & Sixteen Acres (Acrebrook). He wore a paper boat-shaped hat as he short-order cooked fried clams & chips. They retired to Clearwater, Florida which we visited and they had a white Lincoln Continental with the doors that swung out from each other. Very cool.

Marietta  (Mae)  (1907  –  1969)   –  Frank McCarthy
Auntie Mae was tall, thin, stately and always elegantly dressed with cropped grey hair. Uncle Frank was a dapper gentleman.

Esther  1914   –    Louis Levrault
Esther & Lou had a vacation RV which we occasionally visited. Eldest daughter “Loey” remained close to Carole. Donna died a young mother sadly leaving two little ones.

Lois –  Sweeney
Donna –  Sanocki

Harold 1917 –   Irene Tetreault
Harry & Irene were outgoing and laughed easily. Nice family. We mostly saw them at large weddings, baby showers & such.

Marilyn –  Jekot

Florence J.    (1918 – 1937)
Not sure the story of Florence. No surname on the tombstone. She died at 19 and is buried with sister Marietta (Mae) & Frank McCarthy and mother Susan. Interesting that Susan is not buried with husband Francis Bateman in Fairview Cemetery.

Alice  (Allie)  1922    –  Arthur Manning
Alice is named as Mrs. Clarence Parquette of Greenfield, Ma., 19, in her father Francis’s obit. So a first husband unknown to me, although I do remember whisperings about Auntie Allie having had a hard time early in her life. Uncle Art Manning was the only guy we knew from Hampton Ponds and he was nice and funny.
